If the change was sudden, or on one side

Do not wait for a routine cosmetic appointment. A lid that has come down over hours or days, or that is heavy on one side while the other is normal, needs medical assessment. If there is double vision, eye pain, weakness in a limb, difficulty speaking or swallowing, or a sudden severe headache, emergency care is the right route rather than a clinic appointment.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the heaviness has developed gradually and there is none of the above, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say that you are asking about an eyelid so that the right clinic time is booked. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so when you book, because the assessment can sometimes be arranged alongside any tests in fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring any previous eyelid or facial surgery records, a list of your current medicines and allergies, and the names of any conditions you are being treated for. Bring any treatment you use for a dry eye, and say whether your eyes feel gritty or watery, because that changes the plan. Old photographs of your face are more useful than you would expect, because they show whether the lid has changed or has always been that way.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. Where the brow sits at rest and in movement, how much skin is hanging and how much of the lid margin it covers, where the lid edge sits and how far it travels, how much of the pupil is covered, and what the tear film is doing. You should leave knowing which tissue is responsible, whether anything should be done about it, and what the options and their limits are.
