Meet the Hooded Eye Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs eyelid and brow surgery here and who is responsible for the medical content. The other three physicians contribute what an assessment of a heavy lid often needs: the center’s surgical standards and revision experience, the assessment of the skin around the eye and of the eye surface itself, and the dermatologic diagnosis of a lid that is inflamed or allergic rather than heavy.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Periorbital and eyelid surgery · brow position and lid position · the tear film before any operation

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the examination that decides where the operation belongs. He measures where the brow sits against the bony rim at rest and in movement, how much skin is actually hanging in front of the crease, where the lid edge sits and how far it travels, and what the tear film is doing before anything is planned. Where the brow is doing the crowding he operates at the brow and not at the lid, where the shape is inherited and causing no symptom he says so, and where the eye is already dry he treats that as a reason to wait. His stated discipline is to remove only the skin the measurements justify.

Clinical focus

  • Upper eyelid and periorbital assessment: skin, brow, fat and lid position
  • Brow position as the measurement that decides between lid and brow surgery
  • How much of the pupil is covered, and the decision it changes
  • Tear film assessment before any operation on the upper lid
  • Revision assessment when a previous eyelid operation has left a problem

The brow decides the operation

One heavy lid can come from skin, from a descended brow, or from both, and the operations that answer each are not interchangeable. Removing skin from a lid whose brow is crowding it does not correct the cause, and it can leave an eye that no longer closes properly. The examination is short because the decision rests on a few measurements rather than on an impression.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard the plan has to meet and the backstop behind it. Patients who arrive unhappy with an eyelid operation performed elsewhere are usually assessed within his part of the service.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · the skin around the eye and the eye surface

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is what an operation does not address: the quality of the skin around the eye, and the assessment of a dry or irritable eye surface before and after any surgery on a lid.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · inflammatory and allergic disease of the eyelid

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the lid that is swollen, red, crusted or allergic rather than heavy — the conditions that change how a lid looks, that are not surgical, and that have to be identified before an operation is planned.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with whether the brow or the lid is responsible

Arrange an assessment. We will measure where the brow sits, how much skin is hanging and what the tear film is doing, and say whether an eyelid operation, a brow operation or no operation is the honest answer.
